Bobby Somerset lived at Ince from 1922 until 1937. He was a founder member of the Ocean Racing Club, and in 1928 he bought Jolie Brise, a former Le Havre pilot cutter that had already won the Fastnet race. Under him she won it again, in 1929 and 1930. She is said to be the only boat to have won it three times.
In the 1932 race to Bermuda, the schooner Adriana caught fire at night in heavy seas. Jolie Brise had no engine. Somerset sailed her alongside the burning boat and held her there while the crew jumped across. Ten of the eleven men aboard were saved. He was awarded the Blue Water Medal for the rescue.
He sold Jolie Brise later that year. She still sails today, owned since 2003 by Dauntsey's School.
Some accounts say Jolie Brise was kept in the boathouse at Ince. We have not yet found a contemporary source for this, and would be glad to hear from anyone who has.
